Student Stories

Accounting and Finanical Management (Mayo Campus) - Shane Hopkins

I chose this business course as I always had a very strong interest in accountancy, numbers and the logic and process involved in accountancy.

I have many friends who had become Chartered Accountants and were working for large multi-national companies which inspired and motivated me to pursue a career in this academic area.

My experience in GMIT was very positive. I met many people who have become great friends, both students and faculty members.

I completed four years in GMIT Mayo and in that time played for the GMIT football team and represented the college at two Sigerson weekends which was really enjoyable.

I also was involved in the college peer-to-peer learning programme which is known as PASS, helping incoming students on the accountancy course and providing guidance with subject they were finding difficult.

I found the course challenging but extremely rewarding and I loved what I was doing which made studying so much more enjoyable.

GMIT provided me with a great opportunity to work at the top level in accountancy which I now do with leading accountancy firm, Deloitte LLP.

I have also recently qualified as a Chartered Accountant and the knowledge and experience I gained from GMIT was the most significant contributing factor to my recent success.

I found that in GMIT your hard work is rewarded. I received two academic awards in my graduate years.

Overall I will be forever grateful to the faculty and GMIT team for their positive, friendly and challenging environment to achieve my career goals.

I am working in Audit (Consumer, Technology and Business sector) for Deloitte LLP. I have been working in Deloitte for the past two years since graduating.

My time at GMIT helped me considerably for my current role as Audit senior, most importantly, my communication skills which for me are the most important in business.
