Centre for Creative Arts & Media (CCAM) and Brothers of Charity award first bursary to artist Jill Beardsworth

GMIT’s Centre for Creative Arts and Media (CCAM) and the That’s Life arts programme at the Brothers of Charity Services, Renmore, Galway, are pleased to announce that documentary film-maker Jill Beardsworth is the first recipient of The Radius Project Bursary. This creative action is part of a larger initiative, the ‘Radius Project’, in which GMIT’s CCAM is engaging actively with a variety of community and social organisations within a close radius of the campus.

Project leader Dr Seamus McGuinness of GMIT’s CCAM, says: “The Radius Project has two interlinked strands, each integral to the other. Firstly, how we, the Centre for Creative Arts and Media at GMIT, can become more relevant to and a creative catalyst for community engagement in the surrounding area and secondly how we, the school and local bodies and communities, can collectively and creatively build trust and working relationships to develop and sustain social and cultural relationships within these communities - our neighbours.”

Claude Madec, That’s Life Director at the Brothers of Charity Services, says: “This award is an important new departure for both our organisations as it will enrich our respective art practices and could inform future engagements. That’s Life team and art makers are very excited about collaborating with Jill over the next year”. 

The bursary valued at €2,500 is jointly funded by GMIT and the Brothers of Charity Service, Galway. It will support and enable Jill to creatively engage with That’s Life arts programme, working closely with That’s Life community and art makers as part of her Masters in Creative Practice in the Centre for the Creative Arts and Media, starting October 2019.

On the announcement of her award, Jill Beardsworth says: “The ‘That’s Life’ community exude a richness of storytelling potential and an eagerness to experiment and collaborate. I feel that this bursary will enrich my practice over the course of the MA year and will afford me an opportunity to work with broad, diverse and interesting subject matter. I’m also excited to engage the community within the development of my practice”.
