Dr George Onofrei appointed Head of the GMIT School of Business

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) has appointed Dr George Onofrei as the new Head of the GMIT School of Business, commencing this month (September 2021).

Prior to joining GMIT, Dr Onofrei was Senior Lecturer in Strategic Development in Letterkenny Institute of Technology. He has over 15 years’ experience in academia as well as considerable industry practice within the automotive, food and retail sector. He brings experience and a proven track record of success in the development of new programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Dr Onofrei holds a PhD in the area of Operations and Supply Chain Management from the UCD Smurfit Graduate Business School. He has published peer journal articles in a number of premier outlets and his research interests focus on supply chain practices, sustainability, business data analytics, lean and behavioural operations in manufacturing and service industries. His research has received awards at national and international level. He serves on the Board of the European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) and he is a member of various editorial boards, national committee and international research networks.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Onofrei says: “I look forward to continuing the development of new programmes and creating new opportunities within the School of Business working with both staff and industry partners”.

Dr Onofrei succeeds Professor Graham Heaslip who was appointed Head of the GMIT School of Engineering, following Gerard MacMichael’s retirement.

Serving the business educational needs of learners and industry alike across the western region is a key priority for GMIT. As we move forward in 2022 with partners in IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT towards becoming a Technological University, growing a strong range of business educational offerings, including research, will become an increasingly central part of our mission. I wish Dr Onofrei every success in his role.”
