After a Covid-19 induced delay, the Southern Ireland Region of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers, (CABE) attended Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) this week, Tuesday 20 March 2021,  to present their annual award for best first year student in CABE-accredited programmes in the built environment to student Simon O’Grady from Rinneen, Gort, Co Galway.

Simon, who is now in his second year of the GMIT Construction Management (Honours) degree programme, received the award for obtaining the highest overall grades across the seven CABE-accredited programmes.

David Courtney, Chair of CABE Southern Ireland Region, said he was delighted to present the CABE award to Simon as just reward for his very hard work and endeavour. David formally presented Simon with a CABE certificate and bursary of €250 on behalf of CABE.

Mary Rogers, Head of the GMIT Department of Building and Civil Engineering, congratulated Simon on his great achievement and wished him well with his future studies at GMIT. Mary also thanked CABE for their generous sponsorship of the award and for their ongoing support of GMIT programmes and the Department of Building and Civil Engineering.

CABE were also represented at the outdoor event by Gordan Henderson, longstanding committee member in the region. GMIT currently holds CABE accreditations for seven programmes in the Department of Building and Civil Engineering in the areas of Construction Management; Civil Engineering; Quantity Surveying and Building Economics, and Architectural Technology.
