Press Release

GMIT’s Centre for the Creative Arts and Media (CCAM) this week opened a unique and exciting photography exhibition which has travelled almost 4,000 miles from Michigan State University, USA.  The exhibit will be on display in CCAM at the Cluain Mhuire campus, until Friday, 30 November (2018).

This exhibition showcases a diverse compilation of photographs produced by 127 alumni from 39 countries around the globe who completed the first Photography Specialisation delivered by Michigan State University Professors Peter Glendinning, College of Arts and Letters, and Mark Sullivan, College of Music, through the global online learning portal Coursera.  Information about the programme can be found at this link https://www.coursera.org/specializations/photography-basics

The exhibition has been brought to GMIT by Jacinta Moore, BA Hons Contemporary Art student, who completed the first Photography Specialisation in September 2016 and organised the exhibition to visit CCAM which is its first stop on its worldwide travels.  Jacinta maintained contact with the professors since completing the programme and anticipated eventually to bring this ‘travelling exhibit’ to Ireland.  Since its launch over 100,000 students have completed the programme. Jacinta visited the professors at Michigan State University (MSU) campus in October 2018, where she also attended symposiums, exhibition openings and met with members of staff at MSU and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum as part of her dissertation research.

Professor Glendinning says: “We could not be happier about, or more grateful for, the opportunity to share the works in person with students, faculty, and visitors in Galway, and we will alert learners worldwide about the opportunity to travel there to see the show”.

Opening the exhibition is Celine Curtin, Head of Dept, Centre for Creative Arts and Media, Wellpark, Galway. “We’re absolutely delighted to host this exhibition and we’re very proud of Jacinta’s involvement in this. All are very welcome to come along and visit this sensational display of photography,” she says.
