Press Release

In advance of the CAO change of mind deadline on 1st July, GMIT encourages students to consider a career in technology

With 6,000 job vacancies currently in the technology sector alone and over 44,000 vacancies forecast for graduates with technology skills over the next three years, GMIT wants to ensure that students are fully aware of the opportunities available if they pursue an ICT course in further or higher education and training.

Vacancies for people with technology skills have increased by 89% since the start of 2011, while earnings have also risen by 15% over the same period.

Everywhere we look, technology has changed our daily lives - from the way we shop and access services to the way we keep in touch with friends and family. There is massive career potential in all types of business, from pharma to fashion, for students who choose an ICT course.

GMIT has 578 places for students on cutting edge computing and technology courses, available for students to commence this autumn.

100 free ICT course places are also on offer via Springboard+, with part-time and full-time conversion options. See www.springboardcourses.ie to view courses and apply. A survey of Springboard+ ICT conversion graduates nationally recorded that 87% of respondents had secured employment in the industry over the past 18 months.

Commenting ahead of the 01 July CAO Change of Mind deadline GMIT Interim President Jim Fennell said:

“Galway is host to major international and indigenous tech companies.  These companies require a steady stream of graduates with a range of ICT skills. People with ICT skills can look forward to rewarding careers, working in cutting edge fields.”

GMIT offers a range of supports for incoming students on ICT courses, including excellent teaching, learning, and guidance. Our graduates secure high quality jobs in multi-national ICT companies as well as indigenous companies based in the region.

A dedicated resource www.SmartFutures.ie is also available to support people in their decision-making on courses and careers. The site features real life career stories and video interviews with people working in a range of diverse industries including space technology and cybersecurity.
