GMIT Mayo’s Department of Nursing and Health Sciences is pleased to announce a brand-new CAO course, the Bachelor of Arts in Community Development and Youth Work, which commences in September this year in the Mayo campus.

The new three year (L7) and four year (L8) course (GA876 and GA892) includes two professional practice placements and an option to study abroad. Graduates will be equipped will the knowledge, skills and competencies of critical thinkers to work with diverse community and youth organisations, partnership companies and family resource centres among others.

Justin Kerr, Head of Nursing, Health Sciences and Social Care, says: “This new course looks at the multiple factors that impact upon people’s daily lives resulting in social inequality, and ways to contribute to the process of promoting social transformation, equality and better outcomes for all.  The programme complements the excellent range of courses currently offered by the GMIT Mayo Campus.”

Gary Tobin, Student Union President and GMIT Mayo graduate, says: "I enjoyed my time as a student in the campus here in Castlebar, not just for the close, sociable and friendly culture but within the wider Castlebar community. I am a graduate of the Outdoor Education course which involves a lot of outdoor activity and adventures exploring areas from Achill Island and the Western Way to Connemara. Two big advantages to studying in Castlebar is that accommodation is the least expensive in the country and the transport options are excellent with the main entry/exit routes close to the campus and a main train route from Dublin to Westport.”
