Opportunities for the public to learn about all part-time & upskilling courses

GMIT Mayo is opening its doors to the public this Saturday, 2 November (10am to 1pm), to showcase its range of full and part-time courses across the departments of Nursing & Health Sciences, and Social Care, Business, Humanities and Technology including the award-winning Bachelor of Business (Hons) programme, and the unique Outdoor Education course.

The Open Morning event in Castlebar is expected to be attended by hundreds of secondary level students from schools across Mayo, north Galway, Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo and surrounding counties, as well as parents and mature learners interested in the ever-expanding range of part-time upskilling, lifelong learning and Springboard courses.

All visitors will have an opportunity to tour Mayo Campus, see the facilities including the outdoor classroom (one of the first in Irish third level colleges), and visit information stands on all programmes including:  Business, Accounting and Financial Management, Culture and Environment, History and Geography, Outdoor Education, Sustainable Building Technology, Nursing, Social Care and Early Childhood Education and Care. Staff and students will be on hand to talk about the many services available to support students during their time at third level.

Michael Gill, a Head of Department at GMIT Mayo, says “Students and staff will be available to talk about the award-winning honours business course which earlier this year won a top Irish accountancy award at the national Irish Accountancy Awards. The four-year course offers students a broad-based inter-disciplinary business education which prepares them for the workplace and a successful career in business. In the first year, students study a range of subjects (accounting, economics, ICT, law, management, marketing, mathematics and statistics) and at the end of that year they have a choice of selecting the Accounting pathway.”

“Our campus is unique in offering a diverse range of courses in addition to our business, nursing, health sciences and social care courses, such as History and Geography and Outdoor Education. All students have an opportunity to have classes in the campus’ unique outdoor classroom and our courses include practicals from first year, many with work placements which are highly valued by employers, preparing graduates to be “work” ready. Small class sizes are a feature of an engaging learning environment where students can develop and thrive over the course of their studies.”

Student Services Officer Anne Donnelly says: “Visitors will get an opportunity to see the beautiful interior of our Mayo campus, formerly St Mary’s hospital, which has been restored and refurbished in recent years into a state-of-the-art learning centre with excellent facilities. This event represents a wonderful opportunity to discover and find out more about the different options that are available in Mayo in terms of higher education.”

GMIT Mayo’s student services staff will be available to answer any questions visitors may have about GMIT’s access and disability service, scholarships, financial supports, medical and student service and many more. If visitors have queries or special requirements or wish to book a place please email anne.donnelly@gmit.ie Further GMIT open days taking place later this year and next, are: GMIT Mayo Campus, Wed 6 May, 2pm to 5pm; GMIT Letterfrack, Fri 22 Nov & Sa 4 April 2020, 11am to 2pm; GMIT Mountbellew, Wed 4 March 2020, 9.30am to 3pm.
