Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) welcomes funding of close to €1.8m announced today (Monday 6 September 2021) by the Minister for Higher and Further Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris, TD, as part of an additional €38 million for higher education institutions for the 2021/22 academic year.

The devolved capital grant allocation will go toward the capital costs associated with a safe return to campus, infrastructural improvement works to enhance capacity to cater for GMIT’s growing student population, purchase or upgrade of equipment; ICT capital investments, refurbishment works, Access related improvements such as lifts, ramps, and signage, energy efficiency and decarbonisation-related investments, and Health and Safety works.

Just under €180,000 will be allocated for additional ICT devices for disadvantaged students.

GMIT will receive this funding in two tranches, with the bulk of it (€1.3m) allocated immediately and the balance later in the year.

Welcoming the grant, GMIT President Dr Orla Flynn says: “This is a significant allocation supporting a range of capital and infrastructural projects across all our campuses. We are looking forward to a safe return for all our students later this month and this funding will greatly assist us in this endeavor.”

As was the case last year, laptops procured to support disadvantaged students will be distributed through targeted lending schemes run by the higher education institutions. This will be overseen by Access Offices in the individual institutions. Any students who consider they might be eligible to receive a device should contact their Access Office for application details.
