Growing trend towards online interviews and applications

The biggest ever number of employers groups and recruitment companies are to attend this year’s GMIT Careers Fair on Monday 6 October, seeking to fill a broad range of jobs in a range of sectors.

Over 80 organisations representing business, finance, the medtech industry, ICT, hospitality, the retail sector and the construction industry are to take part in the event at the Dublin Road (Galway campus) from 12 noon to 3pm.

Organisations signed up for the event include Intel, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Construction Industry Federation Medtronic, Boston Scientific, SAP, Musgrave Group, Smyths, Lidl, Ericsson, Cisco and many more.

A number of third-level colleges will also have stands at the fair along with local and international recruitment companies and agencies.

Bridie Killoran, GMIT Careers Officer, says changes in technology and communications have resulted in a trend towards online interviews and online applications but companies still like to come and meet students before the formal recruitment process begins.

“The event is extremely beneficial for students as it presents opportunities to network with employers and exchange email addresses and contact details.”

“We ask our students to focus on a number of tasks on the day of the fair. They have to make at least five company contacts (and follow up after the careers fair with at least three of them), get their CV reviewed by a professional on the day, attend a presentation on job interview tips and speak to employers about competency based interview questions and ‘star’ answers,” explains Ms Killoran.

“Valeo Vision Systems and Hewlett-Packard Galway, two of the many companies attending the event, say they are looking forward to discussing future prospects with our students”.

“Valeo Vision Systems are bringing a test vehicle to the college so that students will see innovative technology in action while Hewlett-Packard Galway, who have a long standing relationship of hiring GMIT graduates, will also be looking for final year students, graduates and interns from the technical, engineering and business disciplines in the college,” adds Ms Killoran.
