Open Days to include range of interesting workshops

Friday 17 October and Saturday 18 October: Two Galway campuses

Secondary school students attending GMIT’s two Open Days on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 October next will be presented with opportunities to attend a variety of workshops reflecting particular disciplines of study in GMIT’s two Galway city campuses.

Workshops such as Build a Software App, Film Screenings, Sculpture Pop-in, Pancakes Anyone, Build an Alien, Ceramics Throwing Demo's, Portfolio Clinics, Hydraulics Workshop, Build a Satellite in a Can, and Still Life Sketching are some of the many interesting events taking place during the two Open Days.

The Open Days in the Dublin Road (Galway) campus and the Centre for Creative Arts & Media (CCAM) will also take in tours of the Institute’s state of the art laboratories, workshops, studios, libraries, and student facilities.

Events include CAO and career path talks on a range of disciplines, an exhibition showcasing the various departments and programmes and information stands about all aspects of student life such as the range of student services, finance, accommodation, work placements, international study opportunities and student projects.

A representative of SUSI will also be on site, running College Finance clinics, and iRadio presenters and promoters will be on campus with lots of giveaways and competitions.

Friday’s Open Day will be attended by large school groups from Transition Year to Leaving Certificate while Saturday is an ideal opportunity for parents to attend with their children, and also mature students.

GMIT students from Business, Science, Computing, Engineering, Tourism, Hotel Management and Creative Arts will lead guided tours to each school and department and a shuttle bus service will operate every half hour between the Dublin Road main campus and the nearby Centre for the Creative Arts & Media at the GMIT Cluain Mhuire campus on Wellpark Road.

Dr Carina Ginty, GMIT Schools Liaison Officer, says: “The school tours and workshops are an excellent opportunity for pupils to get a real feel for each discipline area.”

“Pupils, teachers and parents will get to experience GMIT college life, talk to the lecturers and students about the various programmes in all GMIT campuses, explore the lecture rooms, science and engineering laboratories, state of the art kitchens, art studios, media rooms and workshops.”

“For Guidance Counsellors a Mindfulness workshop where teachers will gain lots of techniques to take back to the classroom to help students prepare for their Leaving Certificate.  In addition a networking session for all School Guidance Counsellors and teachers will take place with the Registrar, Heads of each School, the Schools Liaison Office and Access Office. A session will also demonstrate 'GMIT Live in your Classroom' service followed by a networking lunch in GMIT’s College of Tourism & Arts.”
