Open Evening on Accounting study options in GMIT Galway (20 Feb)

GMIT is holding an information evening on how to start a career in accounting, at the Galway campus this Thursday 20 February, 7pm to 8.30pm (Café Foyer).

Lecturing staff and students will be available to discuss the technician, undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes offered by the Institute. Information will be available about the professional accounting bodies and the different pathways to a career in accounting.  

GMIT has developed a strong reputation for accounting education, with undergraduate programmes being offered on both Galway and Castlebar campuses, and technician, conversion and professional programmes also offered in Galway.  In recent years, GMIT commenced postgraduate programmes in accounting in response to demand from Business and other discipline graduates wishing to start careers in this area.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting, for example, is proving popular for graduates of other disciplines, who are finding it difficult to get employment and wish to change direction or enhance their existing qualifications.  Known as a conversion programme, this postgraduate diploma allows graduates to gain numerous exemptions from Chartered Accounting Ireland and ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

Carmel Brennan, Head of Dept of Accounting & Information Systems, GMIT School of Business, says interest in studying accounting remains strong as the jobs market remains buoyant. “The Expert Group on Future Skills Needs noted in their 2013 report that a shortage exists of accountants and auditors with skills in tax, compliance, solvency, and financial management,” says Mr Brennan.

“This is reflected in the recruitment of our students who graduated in November, with most now working as trainee accountants and studying for their professional exams.  If you think about it, every company employs or uses the services of an accountant so there are always job opportunities in accounting even in these recessionary times.”

“We offer a range of programmes suitable for those who have studied accounting previously and those who  aspire to do so.  Our open evening on 20 February here in our Galway campus provides an opportunity for prospective students, parents and teachers to visit the college and find out more about accounting as a career and the programmes GMIT offers.”

GMIT offers the Accounting Technician Ireland Technicians Programme on a full-time basis as well as on a part-time basis two evenings per week for two years.  Applications for this full-time programme are through the CAO (programme code is GA160).
