Press Release
ATU Galway City Student art exhibition

An exhibition of artwork by 22 Contemporary Art students in Atlantic Technological University (ATU) opened in three locations across Galway city from last evening (Tuesday 3 May 2022).

Titled “Search Engine” and curated by the Thinking Engage Critical Auto (TECA) Collective, the work is on show in ATU’s School of Design & Creative Arts, Wellpark Road; Saolta Arts, University Hospital Galway, Newcastle Road; and Galway city library, Middle Street, following the formal launch last evening (7pm) by former Galway City Arts Officer James Harrold.

Welcoming the opportunity to host this exhibition, Celine Curtin, Head of Department of Creative Arts and Media, ATU, says “We are delighted that our students have the opportunity to showcase their work through this dynamic and imaginative exhibition which features a range of practices from painting and photography to printmaking, textiles, ceramics, sculpture and digital media that explore a diversity of themes. This work demonstrates social awareness and their ability to critically reflect current societal issues.

“Some of the works were created during lockdown and isolation and reflect the impact of this situation. The main body of the work was created after restrictions were lifted and perhaps reflects the societal shift involved in a return to the ‘normal’. The rapid deterioration of our biodiversity and diminishing natural resources and human responses to these is examined. Human emotions, personal struggles and the fragility of these, both generally and personally, is reflected in the works. Students had a desire to create work that viewers can relate to and that in some way impacts on and contributes to contemporary society.”

Opening times are as follows:
School of Design & Creative Arts, Wellpark Road, 3 - 7 May
Saolta Arts, University Hospital Galway, 3 - 31 May
Galway City Library, 3 - 31 May

General opening times for all venues are 10.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Please check opening times on https://instagram.com/professional_practice_gmit?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
