Psychiatric Nursing - Peter Collins

Why did you choose this programme?
Psychiatric nursing is a career I wished to pursue and this course was the perfect pathway in achieving this goal. This is a career where you get the opportunity to work alongside people who are experiencing challenging situations in their life and make a difference in aiding them reach their goals.

What do you think of the programme you are studying?
The psychiatric nursing programme offers a wide variety of experience to students. This experience includes modules that are both interesting and challenging. The Programme also offers students clinical placements in various settings which offers participants of the course, experience in what is required to be a psychiatric nurse.

What do you think of GMIT Mayo campus?
The GMIT Mayo Campus is a small campus where there is a close community of students. The lecturers at the campus are easily contacted and available to students. This is a key advantage in being a student at a smaller campus.

What are the facilities on campus like?
On Campus there is a library, canteen, bank, wifi, computer labs and comfortable areas for students to relax and socialise. The town of Castlebar offers a wide range of facilities including gyms, swimming pools, sports facilities, cinema etc.

Tell us about any club or society you were involved in?
There are various clubs and societies at GMIT Mayo Campus. I was involved in the Gaelic football club which offered me the opportunity to meet new people and be part of a team. This was an enjoyable experience which helped me settle into college life at GMIT.

Any advice for first years?
My advice to first years is to get involved in clubs and societies meet as many people as possible and enjoy student life by balancing time between course work and fun.
