12 week blended learning course (Level 7, 5 ECTS)Discipline: Nursing Health Sciences and Social Care
Location: Mayo
NFQ Level: 7
Application Route: Apply direct to GMIT
Places: 25
Why Study?
The course would also be useful for managers of those in a Practice Education role.
This module will engage Practice Educators with skills and knowledge to work with learners in the social care context.
It will clarify the roles and expectations of the three parties;
1) The Learner
2) Placement Provider
3) GMIT
It will introduce a conceptual definition of social care, an examination of the CORU proficiencies framework and the changing expectation of placement supervision and practice education.
The components of supervision, including mentoring, assessment, feedback, reflective practice, support and planning from different theoretical perspectives will be explored.
The significance of reflective practice in the integration of learning will draw upon Collingwood’s theory to practice model as well as Kolb's, Gibbs and Schon amongst others.
Finally, we will examine the assessment framework and in particular the practice educator assessment tool and its application in practice.
Students will be required to complete continuous assessments as part of their studies.
GMIT recognises the need to provide appropriate training to those in the position of Practice Educator within social care in order to maximise the experience of our students that engage in Professional Practice as it is a significant and integral part of their social care qualification.
The ability to embed and transform college-based learning into a student’s professional proficiency is an inter-active process between on and off-campus sites. Central to this transformation is the capacity of the Practice Educators to guide and facilitate GMIT’s social care students on placement.
