Practice Placement 1

Description

The practice placement in year 1 provides the student with early exposure to the practice setting. The student commences the process of socialisation into the nursing profession. The student will acquire skills in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains, whilst integrating theory and knowledge into practice. The aim of the practice placement is to provide the student with orientation to the clinical environment and to introduce the student to fundamental skills necessary for the provision of holistic care to patients/service users. To be successful in this module students must pass each assessment independent of each other.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Successfully complete programmes in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training, Safe Moving and Handling and Non violent Crisis Prevention intervention.

  2. ·         Read and understand the policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines documents that are relevant to practice placements.

  3. Understand the mandatory regulations that are relevant in practice e.g. reporting relationships, returning accurate records and occupational health screening etc

    Safe guarding vulnerable patients - identify vulnerable individuals and implement safe-guarding intervention.

  4. Achieve a level of dependency in the domains of competency :

    Professional values and conduct of the nurse competences

    Nursing practice and clinical decision making competences

    Knowledge and cognitive competences

    Communication and inter personal competences

    Management and team competences

    Leadership potential and professional scholarship competences

  5. ·         Examples relevant to Dependent  level of competency include:

    o   Avail of all learning opportunities to increase knowledge and skills, under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse

    o   Demonstrate the ability to comply with Policies, Procedures, Protocols and Guidelines  to ensure safety of patients and staff

    o   Participate in caring for patients/service users who have a self-care deficit in relation to the activities of daily living.

    o   Participate in the provision of holistic care for patients with common medical disorders and/or patients requiring surgical intervention

    o   Participate in caring for the dying patient and his/her significant others

    o   Relate relevant research to  aspects of nursing care

    o   Demonstrate increasing ability to communicate effectively with patients/ service users, visitors and staff

    o   Participate in verbal reporting and documentation of care.

    o   Display ability to respond appropriately to the psycho-social needs of the patient and his/her family.

    o   Contribute to health and social gain for older persons by participating in their care in a variety of  settings

    o   Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team

    o   Participate in guided reflection on critical incidents in practice by discussion with the clinical and academic team and thereby promote learning from practice.
