A certificate in Quality course provides the basic skills necessary to work in the area of Quality (e.g. Quality Inspector). This Certificate in Quality incorporates the learning outcomes of the Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality Management. This Certificate in Quality, along with (a) the the Certificate in Quality & Regulatory Affairs and (b) Certificate in Quality for Industry - Statistics & Management, make up the add-on Bachelor of Science (Ordinary) Degree in Quality for Industry.
It is possible to complete this Certificate in Quality and the Certificate in Quality & Regulatory Affairs within two academic years (one evening a week in the first year, three evenings per week in the second year). You can then complete the Quality for Industry - Statistics & Management in a third year. Students who pass the assessments for the three modules, or who gain exemption from a module(s) with this Certificate (under GMIT's Recognised Prior Learning process) will obtain the Certificate.
You can obtain any/all of three Certificates but to obtain the Bachelor of Science (Ordinary) Degree in Quality you must already hold a Higher Certificate (Level 6, 120 credits) in Business, Engineering or Science.

- Quality Management 2/ Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality Part 2 (10 Credits Level 7)
The Learning Outcomes for Quality Management I (MGMT07045) are that upon completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
- Have a good knowledge of quality management principles.
- Explain how quality is managed in a manufacturing and service organization.
- Explain the methodology of quality improvement and apply various tools and techniques for analysis of quality.
- Apply a range of problem solving tools.
- Use statistical basic process control tools
- Understand the ISO 9000 quality management standards
- Complete audits against elements of the ISO standard
The Learning Outcomes for Quality Management I (MGMT07043) are that upon completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
- Have a thorough knowledge of the philosophies of quality management and their place in today’s quality movement.
- Critically analyze and improve their own communication skills and to understand the importance of communication in the world of quality.
- Understand the role of leadership, human resource management, customer focus and team work in promoting and achieving quality standards in an organization.
- Critically analyze an organization and design and implement various systems and procedures with regard to quality management in that organization.
- Critically review new developments in quality and apply them as necessary.
- Interpret and describe industry specific standards appropriate to the students field of work including for example ISO 13485
- Analyse and apply a range of process management, continuous improvement, Lean and Six Sigma tools and concepts, financial and performance measures in quality management.
Quality Management 1
- Quality Systems: The evolution of Quality Systems, leading to Total Quality Management. ISO 9000 standards. Quality management hierarchy of documents including quality policy, quality objectives, quality manual, quality procedures, work instructions and quality records.
- ISO9000 Eight Quality Management principles of ISO9000, Management Review, Process Model, Benefits of Standards, Steps to Certification, Sections of ISO9001: Mandatory Procedures, Forms, basic knowledge of Role of IS09004.
- Auditing. Responsibilities/characteristics of the auditor, audit plans, audit documentation.
- Management. Roles and responsibilities of a manager. Planning, leading and organizing. Staff selection, training, development and motivation. Good communication practices. Change management. Team building.
- Quality engineering. Problem solving tools including; flow charts, check sheets, histograms, scatter diagrams, Ishikawa diagrams, brainstorming and pareto analysis.
- Statistical process control. Construction, interpretation and use of average and range charts for variables; n, np, c and u charts for attributes. Process capability.
- Service / Product quality. Product and service specification, customer service and product plans. Performance indicators and benchmarking. Complaint handling and analysis and product recalls. Quality Costs.
- Health & Safety & Environmental management systems. ISO 14000, Safety, Health & Welfare at work act. Food safety systems including HACCP, Q Mark.Total Quality Management and Continuous Quality Improvement.
Quality Management 2
- Total Quality. Quality and competitiveness, internal and external customers. The three 'C's' - commitment, culture and communication.
- Quality Management Philosophies. The Deming philosophy - the role of statistics, the theory of knowledge and understanding human behaviour. Other quality gurus - Juran, Crosby, Feigenbaum and Ishikawa. Comparison of quality philosophies.
- Managing for quality. Customer focus, teamwork, continuous improvement, organization culture, leadership and strategic planning.
- Review of Quality Standards - Automotive standard ISO/TS 16949:2009; GMP and EC Directive 2003/94/EC; Medical Devices ISO 13485, Testing Laboratory ISO/IEC 17025
- Quality Awards. Baldridge Quality award, EFQM Excellence award, other national and international quality awards.
- Leadership and Human Resource management. Quality and organizational structure. Management and planning tools. Employee empowerment, improving personal effectiveness. Teamwork and Quality improvement teams. Management and planning tools.

The Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality qualification helps operators move into Quality Inspector - type roles. The Bachelor of Science in Quality for Industry helps people obtain promotion to Line Leader/ Supervisor roles.

Total fee (Tuition Fee plus Student Contribution) for the full 20 Credit Certificate is €1,600.

- €800 for Quality Management 2/ Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality Part 2 (10 Credits)
There are additional membership and exam fees (€150 per year) payable directly to Excellence Ireland. Payment can be made by Credit Card, Debit Card, Bank Draft or Postal Order (made payable to GMIT). Payment in cash not possible.
Fees are fully refundable up to the day the course starts, thereafter there are no refunds.
Students who enrol for this Certificate will qualify for issuing of a GMIT Student ID Card.
The first half of this Certificate (Quality Management 1/ Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality Part 1) (10 Credits Level 7) is delivered onTuesday evenings, from 7pm to 10pm, from September 2018 to May 2019. The second half of this Certificate (Quality Management 2/ Excellence Ireland Diploma in Quality Part 2) (10 Credits Level 7) is delivered on Tuesday evenings the following year, from 7pm to 10pm, from September to May. If you want to complete both the Certificate in Quality and the Certificate in Quality for Regulatory Affairs within the same two years, you will be attending classes two evenings per week for two years.
The Quality Management 1 and 2 courses commence Tuesday, 18th September 2018.
There are no entry requirements to undertake Quality Management 1. It is a prerequisite however that you have passed Quality Management 1 before you can start Quality Management 2. If having completed this and the other two Certificates in Quality you wish to obtain the add-on award, Bachelor of Science in Quality, you must hold a Higher Certificate in Business, Science or Engineering. If you do not work in a manufacturing area and feel that you may have difficulty undertaking the Certificate in Quality course, you are recommended to undertake the Introduction to Quality Assurance Course which will give you an understanding of the basic principles of Quality Assurance with particular emphasis on quality management system standards including ISO 9001:2008, as well as auditing, statistical techniques and current trends. Places will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis for fully completed applications.
The course is delivered in the GMIT Galway Campus, Dublin Road, Galway. The room will be advised on the Notice Board in Reception on the first night.
