Why Study?

This conversion programme will focus on advanced biopharmaceutical science providing students with the skills required to work within the biopharmaceutical sector.

It is aimed at graduates who have a science background and are aiming to build on their knowledge in emerging technologies in the biopharmaceutical sector.

GMIT have collaborated with the local biopharmaceutical sector to develop this programme which will equip graduates with a firm grounding in the fundamentals of applied biopharmaceutical and immunotherapeutic science and skills to address the identified skills shortages in high tech manufacturing in quality control and process.

Learning Outcomes: 

On successful completion of this programme the learner will/should be able to:

  1. The concept and principles for the development of biopharmaceuticals.
  2. Have a detailed knowledge and systematic understanding of biopharmaceutical science/technologies and the theories and methods associated with the manufacture of biopharmaceutical products.
  3. Have a critical awareness and understanding of the theories and defining concepts for the discovery and design of biopharmaceuticals.
  4. Have a detailed understanding of the underlying principles of quality control, regulatory frameworks and advanced statistical methods for the manufacture of biopharmaceutical products.
  5. Proactively troubleshoot and solve technical problems to optimise the performance of advanced biopharmaceutical protocols.
  6. Employ advanced data analysing, synthesizing and summarising skills to communicate scientific ideas and results.
  7. Source scientific information to design and develop novel hypotheses.
  8. Think independently and make informed decisions based on scientific data from various sources.
  9. Apply advanced skills to constructively criticise, draw conclusions and offer recommendations in the biopharmaceutical science discipline.
  10. Formulate strategies for the design, development and manufacture of novel biopharmaceuticals.
  11. Lead multidisciplinary teams in the design and execution of protocols and projects in various departments including research and development, manufacturing, quality, validation, and technology transfer.
  12. Critically evaluate their own knowledge gaps and undertake self-learning to enhance their performance in the biopharmaceutical/healthcare sector.
  13. Be able to apply knowledge gained to critical assess technical, economic, environmental, and social implications of own and work of others.
  14. Draw on current approaches to research, emerging technologies and extract insights that will allow the advancement of the biopharmaceutical/healthcare sector.

Delivery Method:

It is a full time blended course. Delivery is largely live/ synchronous, in a face to face online environment which takes place in the evenings to facilitate those working. Materials are recorded for those who are unable to attend all live evenings sessions. There are also some recorded/ asynchronous delivery elements. Please note that there are likely to be a number of mandatory online evening attendances for some modules for presentations. You will be informed in a timely manner of any mandatory online attendance requirements. This is all facilitated through Moodle and MS Teams.
