Self Development and Interpersonal Skills

Description

The module aims to develop specific communication skills required for a career in nursing.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the basics needed to establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with the person in need of care in the context of the professional role of the nurse as well as the environment.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the nature of the therapeutic relationship.

  2. Understand the theories of communication necessary to the functioning of an effective therapeutic relationship

  3. Discuss her/his own role within the therapeutic relationship and how this can be implemented effectively

  4. Discuss personal responsibility for one's own health in order to care for others

  5. Demonstrate specific communication skills needed to function effectively as a nurse

  6. Discuss the barriers that can lead to ineffective communication both in the therapeutic relationship and the environment.

  7. Be able to communicate effectively and appropriately in written and in oral form in an organisational context and with respect of The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland guidelines.
