Social Science Perspectives (General Nursing)

Description

This module aims to provide a general introduction to contemporary social sciences and nurture an appreciation of their contribution to understanding of the human person. The module will particularly draw from philosophy, sociology and psychology. The purpose of the module is to enhance the nursing students' understanding of the person and to facilitate them in applying these perspectives to their professional practice.

  1. Outline the main schools of contemporary philisophical thought

  2. Demonstrate a broad introductory knowledge and understanding of sociological perspectives and their relevance to contemporary society

  3. Demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the historical and theoretical development of the discipline of psychology

  4. Demonstrate a nascent ability to apply knowledge of fundamental philosophical, sociological and psychological concepts to an understanding of the person in social settings

  5. Demonstrate an enhanced capacity for thought, self-reflection, self-knowledge and autonomous learning
