Social Science Perspectives (Psychiatric Nursing)

Description

The module aims to provide a general introduction to applied psychological and sociological theory with a view to enhancing the psychiatric nursing students' understanding of the human person and mental health. It will seek to support the student in applying these perspectives to their professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a broad introductory knowledge and understanding of sociological perspectives and their relevance to contemporary society

  2. Discuss factors that inform wider societal understandings of mental health, wellbeing and illness

  3. Demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the historical and theoretical development of the discipline of psychology

  4. Demonstrate a nascent ability to apply psychological and sociological concepts to an understanding of the person in social settings
