Soil Science and Nutrient Management

Description

This module provides the student with an understanding of the formation of soils, the physical, biological and chemical processes within soils, soil fertility and nutrient cycling.

Practical skills attained will include the ability to describe soil types and profiles, soil structure, chemical changes in soil, nutrient testing and management.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate the major processes, both chemical and physical, associated with soils

  2. Explain the role of soils in land management

  3. Assess soil managament issues and design and apply appropriate amelioration techniques

  4. Discuss, apply and assess the practical skills involved in observing, assessing and managing soils

  5. Devise appropriate fertiliser strategies and design a nutrient management plan
