Structural Element Design

Description

This module introduces learners to the structural aspects of Timber, Steel and Reinforced Concrete.

It also presents the concepts and preliminary calculations required for conceptual design of building frames and teaches simple detailing conventions for drawing the structural details for each of these 3 materials.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the relationship between architecture and structural engineering

  2. Describe the properties of the timber, steel and reinforced concrete used in structural engineering applications.

  3. Determine the initial sizes of the primary elements of the structure.

  4. Sketch standard structural details using standard conventions.

  5. Describe how structural elements are designed and constructed.
