The Engineer in Society

Description

The module is an introduction to issues associated with professional engineering and the impact of engineering on society and the environment. The principle of engineering entrepreneurship will be introduced. The importance of the adherence to a Code of Ethics for Engineers will be emphasised.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse the ethical considerations pertaining to engineering decisions and make recommendations.

  2. Review the role and contribution of engineering and develop proposals for the role of the engineer of the future in the context of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  3. Examine the impacts of engineering products and services on customers and the environment, critically analyse the content of associated standards and regulations, and demonstrate the importance of sustainability as good business strategy.

  4. Apply environmental tools to the solution of sustainability problems.

  5. Utilise financial and business analysis tools to analyse data in support of a business plan, or to enhance the competitive position of an organisation.

  6. Analyse a business case for a new product introduction or a business venture facing competitiive pressures
