Student Stories

Heritage Studies - Michael Quinn

As a mature student, I graduated with a first class BA (Hons) degree in Heritage Studies from GMIT in 2003. I then undertook an MA (by research) in Heritage Studies, which focussed on commemorative events in County Mayo. In 2007, I took up the post of Development Officer with Dúchas na Gaillimhe – Galway Civic Trust, a not-for-profit organisation which seeks to improve life in Galway city through heritage-related initiatives. My position involves securing and overseeing projects on behalf of the organisation. These can range from the restoration of landmark buildings through to publishing historical & promotion material on Galway city. I also conduct walks/talks with community groups and visitors to Galway.

I am involved in writing about heritage-related themes. I am also developing an innovative new business named Ardú Heritage Development. This enterprise aims to support communities in the west of Ireland in developing their heritage assets as both a means of promoting tourism and generating civic pride. Studying at GMIT gave me the perfect springboard to professionally pursue my passions for heritage and community development.
