Medical Science Student Projects

Medical Science Student Year 4 Projects

GMIT Medical Science students complete a 10-week undergraduate project in year four having already completed a 27-week structured Clinical Placement programme in a diagnostic hospital laboratory in year three.
The purpose of this project is to demonstrate that the student scientist can systematically and objectively design an experimental process in order to test a hypothesis.

It requires that the student should also be able to interpret and discuss results from these experiments and present these findings in thesis format.

Schedule:
This 10-week project runs from early March to late May during which time the student is expected to have completed the thesis writing.

Nature of the Project:

  • The student is expected to design, plan and carry out a laboratory-based research project, including an extensive literature review.

  • The student should also be able to analyse data and use critical thinking in arriving at conclusions based on empirical evidence, to evaluate the findings of the research and present in thesis format.

  • It is also expected that the student will demonstrate a commitment to self-directed learning and personal achievement.

Subject Matter:
The students will have covered a variety of clinical laboratory science modules including:

  • Clinical Chemistry

  • Cellular Pathology

  • Maths/Stats

  • Immunology

  • Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science

  • Molecular Biology

  • Genetics

  • Quality Management

  • Medical Microbiology

The students will also have completed a 26-week clinical placement in a hospital laboratory rotating through different clinical diagnostic departments including Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Cellular Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology.

During this placement they will have seen and worked with state-of-the art laboratory equipment and instrumentation with emphasis on the importance of laboratory tests and their clinical interpretation.

Subject material for projects could include topics related to:

  • Diagnostic and Analytical Techniques

  • Quality Management

  • Verification/Validation Studies

  • Microbiology

  • Immunology

  • Haematology

  • Transfusion and Transplantation Science

  • Clinical Chemistry

  • Molecular Biology

  • Bioinformatics

  • Stability Studies

  • Environmental Monitoring

  • Cleanroom Technology

  • Statistics
