Nursing the person with a chronic illness

Description

Chronic illness is a leading cause of ill health. As members of a healthcare system, which is focused on illness, together individuals, families and professionals play a key role in determining the experience of chronic illness. A comprehensive understanding of chronic illness is essential in order to manage it successfully.

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the nature of chronic illness, the factors that contribute to it and how it may be effectively managed.

 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate the socio-economic, political, cultural factors which contribute to chronic illness.

  2. Critically analyse the impact living with a chronic disease poses for the individual and their family, health system and wider community.

  3. Explore the need for the implementation of holistic care, inclusive of a multidisciplinary approach to promote self-management and optimal functioning.

  4. Explore the contribution that educational approaches can make in enhancing the physical, psychological and social well being of the person with a chronic illness and their family.
