Biology in Mental Illness 1

This module introduces the student to the key biological concepts including the neuroscience underpinning physical and mental illness as applied to psychiatric nursing. It will adress the epidemiology, pathophysiology, biological theories and treatment of major chronic and highly morbid conditions that present to the health care services.

1. Demonstrate understanding of biological theory in mental illness

2. Describe the theraputic management of major disorders in mental illness

3. Demonstrate understanding of the pathophysiology of major chronic physical illness

4. Demonstrate understanding of the relevance of chronic physical illness pathology in patients with mental illness

5. Demonstrate understanding of the clinical presentation of major chronic physical illness
