Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing Practice Studies 3

Description

In most clinical settings nurses work with people experiencing a variety of crises. These crises may be based on physical, psychological, mental and spiritual distress. The aim of this module is to enable the student psychiatric mental health nurse develop the skills necessary to support people who are in crisis or who are experiencing life problems or enduring mental illness. Recovery principles and the values of compassion, care and commitment will underpin the module. Furthermore, the student is encouraged to think beyond the symptoms of mental ill health to the person who is experiencing them, their families and supporters.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the role of trauma and loss in the development of mental disorder/distress

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of pertinent issues in relation to older persons and women's mental health

  3. Work collaboratively to develop a recovery based individual care plan based on a holistic assessment of need for those experiencing mental health distress or crisis

  4. Demonstrate knowledge of therapeutic milieu and how to promote same

  5. Demonstrate the ability to assess and evaluate risk and manage same

  6. Demonstrate knowledge of recovery work with people who have severe and enduring mental health problems

  7. Demonstrate knowledge of the skills required when working with people with a diagnosis of a specific mental disorder

  8. Demonstrate knowledge in relation to working creatively in identifying therapeutic practice and treatment options with service users and their supporters

  9. Demonstrate the ability to independently direct own learning, identify own strengths and learning needs and a plan to meet same. Contribute to promoting peer learning and engaging in co-producing teaching and learning seminars relevant to psychiatric and mental health nursing practice studies
