Professional Design Practice

Description

Professional Design Practice is the culmination of four years study that allows students to explore an area of personal interest in a research led design based project. To aid in this endeavour students will undertake a study trip as part of the process.

The module will create a culture that thrives on new thinking and ideas; new areas of exploration and experimentation related to the on-going development of the design and manufacture industry. It integrates and applies research to two and three dimensional design development and refinement that will produce high quality, market ready products.

Peer and staff feedback, comment and analysis are integral components of the module and combine with formal presentations made at each key stage in the process. The final output of this module will include a body of research and design work accompanied with a professionally manufactured prototype exhibited in an end of year exhibition.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Analyse, evaluate and propose a substantive and realistic research topic that will benefit the design and prototype industry

  2. Research, investigate and develop the capacity to think critically and reflectively about design, innovation, exploration and experimentation

  3. Assess the function and role of design when integrated with new manufacturing, process and material technologies

  4. Schedule for, formulate design specification drawings and manufacture high quality market ready finished prototypes

  5. Design, develop, re-design and refine new and existing products and components ready for introduction to the marketplace

  6. Validate process, thinking and direction through a rigours presentation and defence process

  7. Organise, prepare and execute an exhibition to promote a body of work to industry and/or public
