Building Science and Materials

Description

This module introduces the student to the full range of materials and material sciences that are in common use on all kinds of construction projects. The practical element will enable the student to competently complete a set of concrete laboratory tests and materials science laboratory tests.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify material properties and products associated with construction and civil engineering projects

  2. Describe the physcial properties of materials,  their production and uses

  3. Outline quality control, health and safety and environmental issues associated with materials use

  4. Conduct concrete laboratory testing of materials

  5. Have a knowledge of the fundamental principles of science appropriate to construction.

  6. Perform well-defined laboratory experiments relevant to construction.

  7. Demonstrate the applications of science in construction.
