Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology ran a special programme of events as part of Ireland 2016, the official state programme to mark the centenary anniversary of the 1916 Rising.

Our multifaceted programme of over 50 events extended to all of our campuses, to local communities and beyond.

The range of activities that took place included:

  • commemorative ceremonies

  • cultural activities

  • musical performances

  • a concert

  • re-enactments

  • receptions

  • a tribute dinner

  • an inter-faith service

  • a GAA match

  • book and booklet launches

  • a pop-up bookshop and cinemobile

  • exhibitions

  • fieldtrips

  • a design and creative arts competition 

  • awards of bursaries and scholarships

  • outreach activities

  • an active learning seminar

  • a seven-week public lecture series to celebrate the provision of 21 years of heritage studies education at GMIT

 

Galway County 1916 Rising heritage trail: go explore the historic sites & memorials

This guide book was written and edited by GMIT researchers Dr Mark McCarthy and Dr Shirley Wrynn, and Galway County Heritage Officer Marie Mannion.

Four 1916 heritage trails are documented in the book, namely:

  1. ‘The Signatories Trail’ (Ballymoe, Tuam, Ros Muc & An Spidéal)

  2. ‘The Cradle of the Rising Trail’ (Athenry)

  3. ‘The Route of the Rising Trail’ (East County Galway)

  4. ‘The Liam Mellows Escape Trail’ (South County Galway)

Descriptions, colour photographs and GPS coordinates are included for each point of interest, as well as route maps.

"Remembering Galway 1916" Short film series

As part of the 1916 Centenary Programme for the County of Galway, a series of eight short films on ‘Remembering Galway 1916’ were produced by Galway Film Centre, and can be viewed below.

They were developed as part of a Galway County Council and Heritage Council production, in association with GMIT.
