Fees for Non-EU Students
If you do not hold a European Union passport or an Irish Birth Certificate, you may still be entitled to free tuition fees if you fall under one of the following categories:
- Persons who have official refugee status in Ireland.
- Family members of a refugee who are granted permission by the Minister for Justice and Law Reform to enter and reside in Ireland. GMIT will require to see original letter from Minister for Justice and Law Reform which confirms family member status of refugee and GNIB registration card.
- Persons who have permission to remain in the State as a family member of a European Union citizen. GMIT will require to see original family member’s letter from Dept of Justice and Law Reform, passport, and residence card bearing the title of 4EU Fam.
- Persons who have been granted Humanitarian Leave to remain in the State or be a person in respect of whom the Minister for Justice and Law Reform has granted permission to remain following a determination not to make a deportation order. GMIT will require to see original letter from the Dept of Justice and Law Reform stating either that the person has humanitarian leave to remain in the State or permission to remain in the State following a determination not to make a deportation order. Passport and GNIB Certificate of Residence Card will also be required.
If you do not qualify for free fees based on the above criteria, you may be eligible for the EU fee if you fall under one of the following categories:
- Persons whose principle residence for the purpose of taxation has been in an EU member state for a minimum of three (3) of the last five (5) years prior to entry to third level
- AND has spent three (3) of the last five (5) years in full-time study or work in an EU member state prior to commencement of the course. If an applicant is under 23 years of age on commencement of the course then the principle residence for the purpose of taxation of the parents will be examined. If an applicant is over 23 years of age on commencement of the course then the principle residence for the purpose of taxation of the applicant is examined. Prior residence as a full-time student alone does NOT qualify a student for EU fee rates.
- Dependent children of Irish nationals whose principle residence for the purpose of taxation has been in an EU member state for a minimum of three (3) of the last five (5) years prior to the applicants entry to third level AND has spent three (3) of the last five (5) years in full-time study or work in an EU member state prior to commencement of the programme.
- Dependent children of a Diplomat (of any nationality) where the Diplomat resides in the EU.
- Dependent children of Irish nationals whose principle residence for the purpose of taxation has been in an EU member state for a minimum of three (3) of the last five (5) years prior to the applicants entry to third level AND has spent three (3) of the last five (5) years in full time study or work in an EU member state prior to commencement of the programme.
- Dependent children of persons who have permission to remain in the state as the spouse of an Irish national.
- Persons who have permission to remain in the State as parents of an Irish citizen or the children of such persons, not having EU nationality.
- Students who hold EU/EEA/Swiss nationality but were not resident in these states, have completed five academic years of study (at either primary or post-primary level) in a EU/EEA/Swiss State and commence their first undergraduate course of study. Persons will be required to produce a valid EU/EEA/Swiss Passport and letter from a primary or post-primary provider of education confirming attendance for a period of five consecutive years of education.
Please note that the assessment of whether a student is liable for Standard or NON-EU fees is determined at the point of registration for a programme and cannot be changed subsequent to registration to the initial year of a programme.
