FAQs - Part-time Courses

The programmes available to apply for are listed here. We offer courses in Business, Technology, Creative Arts and Media, Engineering, Humanities, Computing, Nursing, Health Sciences and Social Care and Science, on our Galway and Mayo campuses. You can click on the programme title for further information.

The online application system opens on 17th February 2022. The closing date is 31 August. It is advised that applications are made as early as possible, as some programmes fill up very quickly.

To apply for any programme, log on to www.apply.gmit.ie and follow the instructions. When you get to the application menu, select the application type that was listed on the webpage from the dropdown box. Generally, the application types are L6, L7, L8 and L9.

For some programmes, yes, you need to hold a third-level qualification to be eligible to apply for entry. Entry requirements are listed in the programme information on the ATU website.

If you don’t hold formal third-level qualifications, but have significant experience in industry, you may be able to apply for certain programmes through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a system whereby learning acquired through work experience and/or through certified programmes can be acknowledged as a basis for entry to a programme. There is more information here.

Firstly, when making your online application, you must indicate that you wish to be considered for RPL. When you have completed your online application, send a comprehensive, up-to-date CV to Learn@gmit.ie (the email address for the Department of Graduate Studies and Professional Development), where your CV will be assessed, and you will be notified when or if your work experience is deemed suitable for the RPL process.

You will be sent guidance documents to help you complete the process, and we will support you with any questions you have.

Yes, a non-refundable assessment fee of €100 applies to all RPL ePortfolio applications for ATU

Yes. Please email a certified copy of your transcript (with official translation, if necessary) to Learn@gmit.ie so that your qualification can be assessed under the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

The application system we use at GMIT does not issue an email when an application has been made. When you have successfully applied in apply.gmit.ie, all the checklist items will be ticked off. You will then click on 'application is complete' and if you 'agree to the terms', you will get a 'signature' page which confirms you have made your application.

You should expect to hear from us within three weeks of making your application.

The cost of your programme should be listed on the programme page on this website under "Course Fee" and/or "More Information".

Ideally, applicants who have been accepted on to a programme, would pay when registering. However, instalment plans can be put in place, on request to Learn@gmit.ie. If your employer is paying your fee, or a portion of your fee, you can request an invoice from Learn@gmit.ie.

Next year's mode of delivery - online, face to face or a combination of both - is entirely dependent on the government health advice and level of restrictions in force during the upcoming academic year 2021/2022. It is therefore not possible to say what the exact mode of delivery will be right now, as ATU will be required to adhere to such advice and make decisions in line with health and safety requirements. For the academic year 2020/2021 courses were delivered via a combination of fully online and either live or recorded lectures.

Generally, programmes start in mid-September (subject to a viable enrolment). The dates for 2021/2022 are currently being finalised.

Unfortunately, we don’t permit deferral of these programmes, but we look forward to hearing from you when your workload allows.
