GMIT invites school children to take part in national robot art challenge

GMIT’s Department of Computer Science & Applied Physics are inviting primary and secondary school children to take part in a national art competition called The Robot Art Challenge, details of which are available here.

Run in partnership with Munster Technological University (MTU) and a number of other institutes, the national competition is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and encourages the creative and artistic use of computer-coding logic to draw pictures and patterns.

Dr Sean Duignan, Head of the GMIT Department of Computer Science & Applied Physics, says the competition is inspired by the traditional ‘School Art Competition’ ideals which many parents will remember. “It is an excellent opportunity for young people to explore their creative side and to learn some practical and valuable coding skills which they will have for life. Draw whatever you like, your favourite character, create a fancy pattern, design a house, there is no limit to what you can create.”

Prizes include robots and One4All vouchers for student and schools:  1st Prize - €500, 2nd Prize - €250, 3rd Prize - €150, Top 50 other entries – 50 x €50 Vouchers, plus 10 x VEX IQ Robot Kits for 10 schools around the country. Closing date for entries is 21st May 2021 .
