GMIT Centre for Excellence in Furniture Design & Technology celebrates 25th anniversary

Hundreds of secondary school pupils from across Ireland and members of the public are to attend an Open Day in GMIT’s Letterfrack campus in Connemara on Friday 23 November.

GMIT Letterfrack, the National Centre for Excellence in Furniture Design and Technology, is a leading provider of degree programmes related to the furniture industry and post-primary teacher training in technology based subjects.

Two information sessions will take place on the day, the first commencing at 11am and the second at 2pm. Each session will begin with a presentation on all programmes delivered in the campus. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk to staff and students and learn about all aspects of student life on campus. A tour of the facilities will take in the state of the art machine halls where demonstrations will be given on laser machines, CNC technology, robotics and more.

Dermot O'Donovan, Head of the Department, GMIT Letterfrack, says "Our programmes are particularly suited to students who are interested in subjects like Construction Studies, Design & Communication Graphics, Art & Design and Engineering.”

“The open day is great for getting specific information on the programmes in Furniture Design, Furniture Technology and Teacher Education. It’s also an opportunity to meet with lecturing staff and students, see the campus and student facilities and also experience first-hand the wonders of applied technologies in our machine halls and workshops."

GMIT Letterfrack this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, an eight week exhibition of student and graduate furniture items is taking place in Farmleigh Gallery in Phoenix Park, Dublin from 2 November 2 to 20 December. During this time three seminars based upon the themes of design and technology education, will take place.
