Bereavement and Loss

Description

This module aims to develop the learner’s competency in understanding the bereavement process for persons and their families throughout the life span within a health and social care context.   Learners will enhance their competencies related to the theories of bereavement and loss and critically appraise therapeutic interventions using empirical research and evidence based practice.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically analyse the meaning of bereavement and loss.

  2. Critically appraise theories related to bereavement and loss.

  3. Critically appraise the literature pertaining to death of a child and /or spouse.

  4. Critically understand the process of working therapeutically with grief and trauma and providing bereavement support.

  5. Critically appreciate the significance of self-care, resilience and vicarious traumatisation.  

  6. Critically appraise cultural and ritual aspects of bereavement.
