Building Surveying

Description

This module introduces the students to the tools and skills required to use modern land and building surveying equipment effectively for applications associated with Architectural Technology. The module also introduces the students to the skills required to describe and analyse building defects, decay and performance failures in historic buildings working to current best practice guidelines.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify map features and details and calculate areas and coordinates on Ordnance Survey Ireland maps.

  2. Undertake a tape and offset survey, perform accurate distance measurements with a tape, and complete a measured building survey.

  3. Complete the temporary adjustments and the permanent adjustments of the automatic level and use the instrument to survey a line of levels to a defined accuracy.

  4. Apply the expertise gained with the level to produce cross sections and contours (using the indirect method).

  5. Describe and identify the historic features of a building.

  6. Analyse a historic building facade, its materials, defects, decay, performance failures and repair options, and specify sustainable repair works with minimal environmental impact. 

  7. Apply the Department of Arts,Heritage and the Gaeltacht's conservation principles and guidelines.

  8. Use the Total Station to survey a site and download the surveyed points into an appropriate software package to produce a site layout drawing. 

    Undertake land surveying tasks sustainably in accordance with sustainable land use and design objectives.
