Corporate Finance

Description

The purpose of this module is to prepare the student with the knowledge and skills required for a role in Finance in industry. It focuses on the role of the finance team in making investment decisions – considered to be the biggest financial decision the finance team will make. It looks at the subsequent financing decisions. Students will be expected to display a thorough knowledge of the various sources of finance available to an organisation to assist in any particular investment decision undertaken.

The module also focuses on corporate finance issues such as working capital management, cost of capital, capital structure theories, impact on market values, business valuations and risk management. The student will gain problem-solving skills and the ability to apply creative thinking skills across a range of corporate financial management scenarios.

Learning Outcomes

  1. On successful completion of the module the learner will be able to discuss the role and purpose of financial management in the business and corporate environment. Demonstrate extensive knowledge of financial management concepts to allow him/her to contribute effectively in a business team context.

  2. Appraise capital investments through the use of appropriate methods including applying the effects of taxation/inflation/uncertainty as well as justify a recommendation.

  3. Recognise and collate the information necessary for a variety of working capital management scenarios as they relate to the business and corporate environment.

  4. Evaluate appropriate sources of finance for particular situations including the ability to apply problem solving skills and creative thinking across a range of corporate financial management scenarios.

  5. Assess cost of capital/sources of finance implications for corporate entities and justify the recommendation.

  6. Apply foreign currency risk management techniques together with interest rate risk management techniques.

  7. Perform business valuations in various alternative scenarios and provide advice in the context of a finance manager.
