Critical Theory 1: Introduction to the Practice

CT 1 considers the various themes and debates surrounding our understanding of art and its histories. It introduces key skills in visual analysis and critical essay writing skills. It considers the contested nature of meaning in art, the tensions between fine art and popular culture, and, the relationships between art and philosophy.

1. • Understand the key themes and debates defining Critical Theory and its relationship to art and culture
2. • Acquire critical skills in describing, interpreting and evaluating visual artefacts
3. • Develop core skills in critical analysis through an understanding of the essay format
4. • Attain an understanding of the tensions between fine art and popular culture
5. • Reflect critically upon their own understanding as to the role of the artist in society
6. • Appreciate the connection between art and key philosophical debates throughout history
