Green Energy Technologies
Description
This module looks at the role that energy plays in our lives and provides the learner with an appreciation of the key issues associated with green energy provision.
Initially, the physics of energy in its relevant forms will be explored, and the student will learn how to calculate/estimate the energy content of a wide variety of systems. Different sources of green energy will be explored, with present and future limitations considered. An awareness of the environmental impact of different energy production technologies will be imparted. Energy conversion processes will be examined, and the energy storage problem will also be explored.
The module will inevitably touch on socio-political aspects of the energy problem, however the focus of the module will be on understanding the physical and technical issues associated with the problem.
Learning Outcomes
Explain and critically analyse energy conversion, transmission and storage for a range of energy technologies.
Quantify the energy generating potential of the main sources of renewable energy and analyse energy conversion from renewable energy sources.
Experimentally investigate various energy conversion and storage methods.
