Hydraulics 1

This module aims to (1) understand the general hydraulic principles of free surface flow in pipes and channels; (2) solve practical engineering problems related to free surface flows. The module will provide a grounding for level 8 Hydraulics.

1. Explain, derive and apply the continuity, momentum and energy equations to basic problems in pipe flow.

2. Solve simple pipe systems for pressurised flow.

3. Determine flow rates and size open channels and gravity pipelines.

4. Calibrate flow measurement devices and gauge streams using velocity meters.
