Innovation and Enterprise in the Built Environment

Description

This module encourages the entrepreneurial spirit within built environment students and builds their skills and knowledge so that they will be able to innovate and create enterprise in their future careers within the sector. The skills and knowledge gained are equally applicable to their own future businesses or to their role within built environment organisations. Students are required to develop a new idea for the built environment sector and examine its commercial potential using business planning techniques. 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the role and function of entrepreneurs in society

  2. Implement a range of critical thinking and ideas generation techniques

  3. Plan for the transition of concept ideas to implementation / commercialization stage in terms of product / services

  4. Identify the needs and range of research support needed to assist in the transformation of ideas to viable enterprise

  5. Outline the principal sources of funds available for the start up business and entrepreneur and further describe the financial planning needed to support a new product or service

  6. Produce a viable business plan for a new business idea linked to the built environment including all key sections. Idea, Market research, market size, sources of funds, resource planning, financial planning, marketing etc.

  7. Explain the key factors in protecting and developing a successful and viable product or service in terms of legal protection of the idea and ongoing development of the idea in an international / export context
