Introduction to Adapted Physical Activity

Description

To introduce students to the area of inclusiveness and adapted physical activity for people within special populations. The students will gain an understanding of the comprehensive psychological/physiological factors affecting the participation of special populations in exercise programmes.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the different physiological and psychological responses and adaptations to exercise programmes of special populations.

  2. Explore and explain the challenges and benefits of sport and physical activity for a ‘special population’ . This may include disabilities, pregnant individuals, elderly, obese population.

  3. Define and describe different disability types; psychologically, intellectually and physically. Including the need for modified exercise programmes for special populations.

  4. Design and deliver a coaching session for a special population, including an evaluation of the programme (feedback) and personal performance. 

  5. Analyse the implications that social attitudes have towards people within special populations participating in sport and physical activity.
