Introduction to Art and Sustainability

Description

This module aims to introduce the learner to the concept of sustainability within contemporary art practices. It will examine current and historical issues of sustainability within the history of contemporary art and social design practices.

It provides the learner with the opportunity to engage in a collaborative group project focussing on one aspect of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

It will allow for critical self-reflection on their assumptions and values within this context. The group project development and execution will seek to engage with innovative and imaginative creative solutions.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop an awareness of the challenges of sustainability within a contemporary art framework

  2. Explore both historical and current approaches for role of sustainability within contemporary art 

  3. Design and participate in a group project highlighting a chosen area  of sustainability

  4. Reflect on the process of collaborative/group work with respect to the sustainability agenda

  5. Describe the importance of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to contemporary art practices.
