Materials and Processes 1

Description

This module will introduce and explore a variety of wood, wood-based, metal and metal-based materials. Basic materials science, including chemistry and physics of wood and metals, will be covered. The processes involved in creating the materials will be examined. Basic machining and assembly processes and methods used to remove and join material will also be demonstrated. The Health, Safety and Environmental considerations associated with using materials will be considered. The design opportunities presented by the materials and processes will be investigated.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate and specify a variety of wood and metal based materials for use in product design, prototyping and manufacture

  2. Evaluate and specify a variety of basic machining and assembly processes for wood and metal based materials

  3. Appreciate the health, safety and environmental considerations associated with the materials and processes

  4. Experiment with design opportunities presented by the materials
