Materials and Processes 2

Description

This module will continue study of the science and the performance characteristics of modern materials. It will further examine more automated manufacturing processes and their design challenges/opportunities. The processes involved in the creation of materials such as clays, plastics, fabrics and other synthetic materials will be examined. Basic process involved in working with such materials, and other natural materials such as stone and slate, will be demonstrated. The Health, Safety and Environmental considerations associated with using the materials will be considered. The design opportunities presented by the materials and processes will be investigated.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate and specify a variety of synthetic and natural materials for use in product design, prototyping and manufacture

  2. Evaluate and specify a variety of basic machining and assembly processes for a variety of synthetic and natural materials

  3. Appreciate the health, safety and environmental considerations associated with the materials and processes

  4. Experiment with design opportunities presented by the materials and processes
