Mathematics 1

Description

This module covers:

  1. The fundamentals of Numeracy, Algebra, Trigonometry, Vectors and Complex Numbers from an engineering perspective.
  2. Calculus – both Differentiation and Integration, and their applications to modelling engineering problems.
  3. Linear Algebra topics including matrices and matrix methods for solving linear systems arising in engineering contexts.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply the rules of arithmetic to evaluate numerical expressions involving fractions and powers.

  2. Simplify and manipulate algebraic expressions and formulae.

  3. Solve linear, quadratic, simultaneous, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric equations and word problems.

  4. Draw graphs of standard functions and deduce information from graphs.

  5. Calculate trigonometric ratios and select and apply the correct formula to solve a triangle.

  6. Perform calculations involving complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form.

  7. Add vectors graphically and in component form, determine magnitude and use vector products in simple applications.

  8. Differentiate single variable functions and apply differentiation to solve rates of change, optimisation and motion problems.

  9. Evaluate integrals using standard rules and by substitution and find the area under a curve.

  10. Perform matrix operations and employ matrix methods to solve linear systems of equations in two and three variables.
