Modernism

Description

This module examines the growth of new ideas in literature and the visual arts from the late 1800s into the twentieth century. These ideas will be examined in their original European contexts; there will also be a focus on the spread of these new influences into Ireland during the twentieth century. 

Learning Outcomes

  1. articulate the core principles and practices that transformed literature and the visual arts in the twentieth century

  2. use art-historical terms to comment on important examples of work in the visual arts  

  3. describe the arrival of new aethetic influences in the work of Irish artists and writers during the period

  4. analyse the local factors that affected the diffusion of new cultural ideas in twentieth-century Ireland
