Press Release

The Bachelor of Business (Hons) programme (GA886) in GMIT Mayo has been shortlisted for a prestigious award in the ‘Excellence in Education’ category in this year’s national Irish Accountancy Awards. This programme of study can lead to two awards one in accountancy and one in business. It is designed on the principle of a broad based education moving towards an element of specialisation in third year and broadening out again in the final year.

The Gala awards ceremony, which takes place in Dublin’s Mansion House on 16 May, is attended by hundreds of leading industry figures. GMIT will be represented by Michael Gill, Head of the GMIT Dept of Business, Humanities and Technology, and programme chair & lecturer Caroline Clarke.

The four-year degree programme in GMIT Mayo offers students a broad-based, inter-disciplinary business education which prepares them for the workplace and a successful career in business. In the first year, students study, accounting, economics, ICT, law, management, marketing, mathematics and statistics. At the end of first year they have a choice of selecting the Accounting pathway and can go on to study the Bachelor of Business in Accounting (Hons) degree.

Michael Gill, Head of Dept, says: “The accounting and business team are delighted that the programme has been shortlisted in this national competition under “Excellence in Education and Training”. We are very aware how well our graduates do once they complete this programme with many going on to senior positions in industry after pursuing postgraduate opportunities. Indeed, our graduates keep us informed of their career developments and continually outline how well prepared they are when they leave the Mayo Campus of GMIT with this qualification. It is a great achievement to be in the last seven in Ireland in this category and we are really proud of that.”

“On the programme itself there is a strong emphasis on the business world.  Students have the opportunity to analyse and evaluate competitive scenarios, to carry out practical projects and to interact with guest speakers from industry.”

“In the third year of the programme there is an accredited work experience module, which offers students the possibility of enhancing their employability through hands-on experience in the work place. We also actively encourage our students to start their own business and have initiative in place to support their endeavours and we work closely with the GMIT Innovation Hub, located here on campus, which gives students a unique opportunity to test their creative business ideas.”

Caroline Clarke, programme co-ordinator and lecturer, says: “We are delighted our programme has got this national recognition. It is heartening to hear the fantastic success stories of our graduates who keep us up to date on their careers and tell us their GMIT course prepared for the workplace and for progressing to their postgraduate and professional exams.”

The accountancy award has been developed in such a way that is closely aligned with the content of the professional bodies so that the material is very relevant to a professional qualification in accountancy. Students wishing to join the programme can transfer in from other colleges of higher and further education and once they are with us really enjoy their higher education experience as they gain an in-depth understanding of the business world on the Mayo campus. There are opportunities to travel abroad on Erasmus and take a semester in another college should students so wish and this can be combined with the study of language on the programme.
